Michael Jackson’s underrated Gem
Someone in the dark was originally part of Steven Speilberg’s E.T The Extra Terrestrial, Audiobook companion album.
Quincy jones, an American record producer, song writer, composer etc, initially became friends with Steven speilberg. At the time Speilberg was filming E.T The Extra Terrestrial.
Once, Michael and Quincy were invited to the sets of E.T and Speilberg expressed an interest to create a record, to Quincy.
So Quincy shared the idea with Michael Jackson that he should do a story book album where he would narrate the story, write and sing a song for the same.
Michael came onboard and MCA records allowed Michael to record the story book album and record the new single, Someone in the dark, under certain conditions.
MCA had breached those comditions and the album had to be withdrawn after a legal battle and a court order.
Ed Eckstine, The Executive Vice President and the General Manager of Quincy Jones Productions, shared this story in the Thriller 40 Documentary.
The song was originally made in two parts. Opening version and the closing version.
The opening version was released in few of Michael Jackson’s albums.
In 2008, Thriller 25 came out and the song recieved some love and criticial acclaim.
But it remains true that this is one of Michael Jackson’s finest pieces that got lost in legalities.
This beautiful song definitely deserved a lot more Love than it recieved.
